Cover Story: India Edition - 12 Kamiya Jani

Touring the world with fashion, one place at a time

Kamiya Jani is an Indian journalist, content creator, anchor, YouTuber, and social media influencer best known for her show ‘Sunday Brunch’ on her YouTube channel Curly Tales, where she invites celebrities to lunch for an interactive session. Curly Tales is a food, travel, experience, and lifestyle content platform founded by Kamiya Jani. Curly Tales is a team of over 20 people based in Mumbai.

  •  How did you come up with the title of your vlog, Curly Tales? The first thing people often notice about me is my curls. It's always a great conversation starter so I decided to name it after my curls. And ‘tales’ because the platform is all about telling tales or stories from different parts of the world.

  • If you could shed some light on your early years when you began your career? My relationship with the media industry began as a news anchor. I worked as a Business Reporter & Television Anchor with some of the big channels like ET NOW, Bloomberg TV and CNBC TV18. I got introduced to production-related work, a taste of corporate culture, and an understanding of the overall business. After working in the industry for 10 years is how I got a grip on how to set up my base to start Curly Tales. Initially I would travel, write, shoot and edit all of the content by myself. I would manage my own travel expenses, and would shoot 60 second long videos which were text heavy. When I would track the performance on these videos they never worked on YouTube. I would only get a 100 odd views. But these same videos would work very well on Facebook. Success is a long and rocky path with unpredictable roadblocks on the way. But the struggle never ends, you have to keep at it. Today I have a solid army that works together in harmony to churn out solid content. But to make a well filmed and edited video, it takes time. The format of storytelling is dynamic and so as a creator, it is my job to keep at it and constantly be on the move to upgrade and innovate.

  • When did you decide to pursue this field as a full-time career? How did this industry excite you?As a travel enthusiast, I used to record all my experiences as blog posts. But soon enough, I realized that this journey may come to a standstill if I attempt to balance both. So, I decided to quit my 9-5 job, bid goodbye to the perks and the frills to do something on my own. At the time I observed that  travel-related content hadn’t been tapped into as much. As a passionate traveler, I decided to invite people to embark on the journeys I took and live vicariously through my photo and video feed. The aim was also to attract audiences to connect with their inner travelers to pack to jet set and go! That's how Curly Tales was born in 2016.

  • When did you start assembling a crew that frequently moved as one? I started out by myself, traveling around with my tripod, selfie stick, and camera, but quickly realized that I would need help to improve the production quality of the video. So it started with just one videographer, who we employed for a long time, and several editors, and now with the team expanding, we are a team of about 8 editors, 5 videographers spread across Mumbai, Delhi, Dubai, and Bangalore. It's been a five-year journey, and we've grown significantly.

  • What's the best piece of advice you can offer someone who wants to establish a career as a Travel & Food blogger? The best piece of advice I can give for starting a career is to add value to people's lives by providing them with useful tips and tricks on how to make the best use of the content that has been created. So, share your experience or, at the end, let them learn from your experience. This is not just for food or travel bloggers, but for all content creators in general.
